Renovation and additions to this Woollahra home required the restoration of a heritage-listed building and the construction of a contemporary rear pavilion. Works to the heritage structure restored the beauty of the original building, while the new pavilion brings refined modernity.

This Woollahra home celebrates heritage charm while embracing refined contemporary living.

Works to the heritage structure restored the beauty and tradition of the original building. The timber and cast iron front veranda was fully reconstructed, reinstating the grandeur of the façade, while period features, including fireplaces, timber windows, shutters and wall panelling, were carefully restored to honour the building’s heritage significance.

In contrast, the new pavilion’s architectural focus is entirely modern. Concealed behind the heritage structure, its straight building lines create a clean and functional design, while a bronze-clad exterior screen creates privacy and intrigue.

The diverse blend of materials and textures applied to the home’s interiors achieves a functional yet unique design. The extensive use of stone throughout the contemporary pavilion – Calacatta marble, Nero Tempesta and Aren Grigis limestone gives the building a strong and solid feel, which is balanced by the warmth of timber flooring, leather wall tiles and textured Pandomo wall finishes. Bronze cladding, stainless steel and polished concrete also introduce an industrial twist.

The design of this home has an environmental focus to ensure the house is naturally comfortable and energy efficient. Passive features, including frameless glass louvres and north-facing windows, maximise natural light and ventilation, while Styrofoam insulation across all masonry walls enhances thermal efficiency. Solar power, gas-powered hydronic heating and LED lighting further maximise the home’s energy efficiency.
